WRWFL Shield
Sunday 7th January saw Ossett Town Ladies first game since the start of December and on a very heavy pitch there was a big risk of both/either of the teams being short of match sharpness and slow from too much Xmas pud (or pub)! No fear - this was a fine spectacle, a strong but fair exciting game of football with the right result!
The first half had chances for both sides with Gemma Howell taking control in midfield, Angela Lines regularly splitting the Republica defense with telling passes and Jody Wray constantly getting past the left back. Town hit the post and forced errors from the keeper but could not find the net. Republica's front line is strong and quick and they did get breaks but the defense was well organised and held firm. The last action of the half saw a Town attack with Gemma making the important pass through only to twist her knee so badly that she couldn't continue (Sarah Law came on).
Half time - Ossett 0 Repubilca 0
Ossett reorganised for the loss of Gemma. From the turn Jody had the left back under pressure again and a cross to the front post resulted in a save from Kate Westmorelands shot rebounding to Jamie Fitton who made sure from three yards. Town 1 RI 0
Republica immediately reacted and piled the pressure on Ossett. The tiredness was showing in both sides with Towns lighter youngsters finding it hard to clear their lines. Republica battered Town for ten minutes and equalised and then took the lead. Town 1 RI 2
With half an hour to go Town got hold of the match, the defense regained their confidence, Keeley Dewhirst showed that she is a good deputy for Gemma in central midfield and Jody continued to create chances as she tormented RI's right back. With 15 mins left an attack down the right involving Jody, Sophie Morrison and Keeley resulted in a trade mark slot past the keeper by Kate and Town were back in it. Town looked the better team but Republica gave them a scare with a shot from the edge of the box causing Becky Woods to dive to her right and pull off a match saving save.
Full time Ossett 2 Republica 2
Extra time was end to end stuff, Town's ladies showed passion throwing their bodies in to make important blocks and again hit the post (a shot by Angela from outside the area). Bodies were falling all over from tiredness and cramp but youth was starting to tell.
Half time extra time Ossett 2 Republica 2
No change, it was still blood, guts, mud and smiles but with seven mins to go that combination of Wray and Westmoreland struck again to put Ossett ahead. Jody beat the full back sucked in the keeper and then turned the ball into the centre for Kate to slot home. We all held our breath for the last few minutes, but that was it!
Final score aet Ossett Town 3 Republica Internationale 2
Ossett Town would like to thank Republica for the spirit in which the game was played, they were very welcome visitors.
No individual player of the match could be awarded, it would be wrong to single out any one of these committed young ladies.
Team
Becky Woods, Keeley Dewhirst, Nikii Howell, Emily Stevenson, Becky Shaw, Jody Wray, Gemma Howell (Sarah Law 45), Sophie Morrison, Angela Lines, Kate Westmoreland, Jamie Fitton.
