Ossett Town Under 11’s - Huddersfield League CUP
Dalton Dynamoes 3 v 2 Ossett Town (After Extra Time)
Scorers: Preston (2)
Player of the Match: The Whole Team
On a gusty day at Rawthorpe, Dalton Dynamoes played host to visitors Ossett Town in the second round of the cup. Town appeared half a sleep when in the second minute the pacey and skillful midfielder from Dalton beat the Town defence on the right and put in a beautiful cross for the Dalton striker to hit home into an empty net. Town gasped and didn't know what had hit them, but soon realised the Dalton no 19 midfielder was something special and needed to be watched carefully, which thankfully Town did achieve for the rest of the game.
With the wind behind their backs, Town took control of this game and whilst it wasn't the prettiest of football it was certainly penetrating stuff and with the Dalton defence and keeper not looking entirely comfortable, Potter, Scott, Awad, Preston, Hartshone and co pressed forward with real purpose and endeavour, supported by captain marvel White in midfield.
Town won a quick succession of corners and with Scott knocking in good crosses Town looked as though they could get the equaliser but on each attempt the Dalton defence desperately got the ball clear.
Soon after, Potter ran into the box to receive a good ball from midfield and was seemingly floored by the keeper inside the area. The referee agreed with the foul and duly booked the offending Dalton player and as Carney was calming waiting to take the resultant penalty, the referee awarded a free-kick just outside the area on the right hand side, much to the annoyance of the Town players and supporters.
Up stepped Scott with his dependable left foot and knocked the ball high and into the box. Hartshone rose above the defence and headed it down into the crowded goal area, upon which there was a goal mouth scramble with Preston getting the final touch to get the deserved equaliser.
Town's spirits were now up and they continued to attack the Dalton goal with the Dynamoes rarely passing the half way line, although when they did, the commanding defence of Sheen, Carney, Hall and Briggs were on hand to sniff out the rare Dalton opportunities. When on one occasion the Dalton attack beat the Town defence, keeper Dann was in outstanding form and on one occasion he raced out bravely to rescue what would have been a near certain goal.
Town secured another glut of corners and with another fine cross from Scott, another goalmouth scramble pursued, and another claimed goal from striker Preston.
Half Time: Dalton Dynamoes 1 v 2 Ossett Town
In the second half, Town would have to battle as Dalton now had the assistance of the wind. And whilst for long periods Dalton were camped out in the Town defensive area, the awesome defence did their job ably supported by an outstanding midfield, with the tenacious Lonsdale in cracking form. Whilst the Town supporters held their breath at times, the players were outstanding and stuck to their job of clearing the ball trying to seek out lone-striker Rogers. On the occasions they found Rogers, and with good control of the ball, Rogers opened up the attack with some neat passes down the left for Horsfall to chase. About half way through the second half, the superb Lonsdale innocently cleared the ball, but to everyone's surprise the ref blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. Dalton equalised from the resultant penalty. Town continued to battle and work hard and in the last ten minutes looked more likely to score than their rivals Dalton.
Full Time: Dalton Dynamoes 2 v 2 Ossett Town
Now with 20 minutes of extra time to play for, Town had to maintain their stamina and for the whole of the period they looked the strongest team. With the wind in their sails, they came close and Potter was denied yet another penalty when he was floored in the penalty area having both of his feet taken away. In the second period of extra time, Dalton again pressurised but had no answer to the battling and tenacious tackling of the Town team. With ten seconds to go and with the Town manager just starting to think about his penalty takers, Dalton hit a weak shot toward goal. As the ball came toward centre back Carney and the keeper Dann, it got a bad bounce to confuse the two and roll into the net for one of the most unfortunate goals you will ever see.
