OSSETT TOWN JUNIORS – U11’s
Huddersfield League
Shelf 0 v 2 Ossett Town
Scorers: Jaz Ahmed and Tom Rogers
Player of the Match: Danny Sheen
On this bright sunny Saturday morning Town trekked over to Shelf in Halifax to try and get revenge for the 5 v 3 loss they suffered earlier in the season. If Town wanted to stay challenging at the top of the division, it was crucial that they came away today with three points.
Town started brightly from the off and within a few minutes were bearing down on the Shelf goal. The Shelf defence though were resolute and stuck to their task of frustrating the Town attack. Whilst Town forced Shelf to concede four corners in the opening 30 minutes, they couldn't capitalise on their pressure as the Shelf defence calmly swept up Town's, uncharacteristically, poor corners. Whilst Shelf looked dangerous on the break, particularly their number 10 striker who last time knocked four past the Town keeper, any attempts were well taken care of by the two centre backs of Sheen and Carney, both of whom switched as required to ensure their number 10 danger man was snuffed out of the game. The centre backs were supported by the dependable Hobson and Hall, operating at right and left back, respectively.
Towards the end of the first half, and despite having most of the ball, Town became restricted to long range shots with Hall, White and Carney all having pot shots at goal, with no success. With the manager bellowing instructions from the sidelines for Hall to first control the ball before letting loose with a shot, Hall thought better of his manager's guidance and when the ball fell to him in space he hit a super shot first time from 25 yards that just sailed over.
Potter and White were busy in the centre of midfield battling well and getting the ball to the wide players of Hartshone and Ahmed who were happy to run at the Shelf defence. The two wide players were superb today, both showing exquisite skill to beat their marker and get the ball forward to the front players of Preston and Rogers.
There was only one occasion in the first half that the defence were beaten and when the Shelf number 12 looked certain to score, goalkeeper Dann ran out of his goals and did enough to force the Shelf attacker to shoot over the bar.
The second half started like the first ended and although Town looked more in control, the Shelf attack looked dangerous on the break. Awad, playing in midfield, was battling hard and stopping the Shelf midfield in their tracks. Striker Preston took on a new lease of life and was causing havoc on the wings and with Briggs now on and in his accustomed right back position, Town looked as though the game was going to go their way. They still though had to score.
Potter and Preston were combining well on the left whilst Awad and Ahmed were playing some neat football on the right. On one occasion Ahmed beat his defender and from a wide position just had the keeper to beat. He hit a powerful shot and just as the Town fans were about to scream 'goooooaaaaaaalllllll", the defender came from nowhere and knocked the ball out for a corner.
It was from the resultant corner that Carney knocked in a beautiful ball. A Town player got his head to it first but it went towards the touchline. The ball was then knocked back into the fray and when Ahmed, waiting at the far post, found the ball at his feet, he prodded the ball over the line, despite the Shelf defence trying to get in the way. One, nil.
The goal saw a renewed confidence in Town and they then pressed for goal number two. It came soon after the hard working Potter, who had had to go off due to being injured, was being treated on the sidelines. With Hall back on the pitch for Potter, Carney sailed in another corner. In similar fashion to the first goal the ball languished in the six yard box for what seemed an eternity with the Shelf players battling trying to clear it. Rogers though reacted the quickest to get his foot to the ball and stroke it home.
Shelf though were not ready to lie down and with minutes to go, they hit the bar as they tried to get back in the game. The ref ended the game soon after and Town basked in their two nil win, a massive improvement from the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Player of the match was Sheen at the back who made several crucial challenges to thwart the Shelf attack.

Ossett Town Juniors Under Sevens Match Reports
Howden Clough vs Ossett Town 4/2/07
The Lions
Equality Street and fractions Howden Clough 4 - Lions 3
Pendulums, pendulums why do they swing? This game was not for the faint hearted spectator. There were twists and turns in a match between two sides equal in skills and passion; from the goalkeepers to the substitutes. A delight of a match was played out with the Lions narrowly missing a well deserved draw. It seemed football today was a game of eight eighths, as Howden Clough took their turn to dominate followed by the Lions turn to be in the driving seat and so on it went.
Howden Clough were the first to take the lead as they used the large pitch for exciting attacking play. The Lions responded well with the equaliser coming from the “Gavin Henson’s “ worn by Geraint Evans. Liam Finney pounced on the rebound from a finely struck shot from TJ McGee, and was left with a yard to place the ball, which he did comfortably.
Thomas Coe, used the flank well taking on the Howden Clough team placing some dangerous crosses into the box. In the second quarter, Howden Clough took the game back to the Lions. Liam Taylor and Sam Allen were dogged in their protection of the goal. Ella Walker was immense in goals, she came out, dived, made herself big, stretched and was the Cat.
At the other end Sam Allen, Liam Hitchthingy and Geraint Evans were denied by the equally brilliant Howden Clough keeper.
In the third quarter, Ossett’s initial upper hand was tamed by a fast and furious Howden Clough resurgence. The tempo and the nerves increased. There were some Norman Hunter tackles, all in the best possible taste, and they were inevitable in such a tightly fought match.
Jack Frost stuck the pendulum in favour of Howden Clough and despite the outstanding efforts of Liam Taylor and Ella Walker the home team went two in front.
The end to end stuff continued, with Thomas Coe coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Geraint Evans narrowed the lead with his second and the Lions ascendancy was cut short by the final whistle.
Man of the match was Liam Taylor
Goalscorers Geraint Evans Liam Finney Geraint Evans
The Tigers
Fractionally more equal Howden Clough 2 - Tigers 4
The Tigers clicked, with some great passing out of defence from William Hall, crowned man of the match on the strength of his running, concentration and tackling. All the Tiger’s performances were just that bit better than before, a sign of increased confidence, development of skills and their unperturbed enthusiasm.
Another good game between equally matched sides saw Oliver Spencer run half the field to shoot but be denied by the diving goalkeeper. Matthew Rogers, like all good strikers, was there to take advantage of the rebound. This partnership between Oliver and Matthew nearly spawned another goal late in the second half, but there was a long way to go before that move was seen, and there were a few tales to tell.
First there was the Howden Clough comeback which saw them take the lead with two quick goals in succession. It brought out Jacob Merrick’s save of the season thus far. The defensive effort was immense with everyone playing their part in stemming the tidal wave of Howden Clough’s attacks.
Necomer Ryan Turfrey had an impressive debut as he etched out a very good midfield display showing great determination which rubbed off on others. The Tigers continued to battle with Oliver Spencer leading the charge. Connor Ryan took a leaf out of Oliver’s book and did his own piece of magic to level the scores mid way through the second half.
Then there was the déjà vu moment when Oliver Spencer followed the footsteps and trajectory of Connor Ryan to put the Tigers ahead.
The Tigers pressured the Howden Clough goal and eventually Finlay Townend slid the ball over the goal line to make it 4 for the Tigers.
The Tigers to a man played well, concentrating for the duration of the match.

CHARLES RICE JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE U15’s CHALLENGE DIVISION
KIPPAX ATHLETIC v OSSETT TOWN
Date: - 4th February 2007 Kick Off: - 11:00a.m.
Ossett Town’s unbeaten twelve game run in the league came to an end when they suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the season, going down by 2 – 0 away at Kippax Athletic.
Ossett were below their best with a number of players struggling with illness and injury, a situation made worse when, after 10 minutes centre back Scott Archer had to leave the field, quickly followed his deputy Shaun Joy who limped off after his first challenge. Consequently Ossett were never able to take control of the game, but in a fairly evenly matched first half did manage to create the better of the chances.
The closest either side came to a goal was after 17 minutes when Ossett thought they had scored. Following a good passing move Josh Hardy produced a driven cross from the right, Hussam Atif volleyed the ball against the underside of the Kippax crossbar but as the ball bounced down and spun away it was adjudged not to have crossed the line.
Half Time: - Kippax Athletic 0 v Ossett Town 0
Ossett made a fast start to the second half forcing an early corner, after the initial ball in had been defended Ossett worked it well from one side of the pitch to the other where Carl Thompson laid a pass inside for Phil Williams to shoot wide from the edge of the box.
Having come close to scoring earlier when Ossett goalkeeper Reece Barker had dived full length to turn a shot round the post for a corner, Kippax eventually broke the deadlock after 22 minutes. This time Barker was unfortunate, he came to collect a ball that had looped up off players in front of him, however the spin took it away from him and as he changed direction he slipped and could only push the ball into the path of the Kippax player who put the ball in the empty net.
With time running out Ossett pressed for an equalizer and came close after 30 minutes when Ross Hardaker battled well for the ball on the left edge of the Kippax penalty area before producing an excellent cross that Shaun Joy couldn’t quite angle goal wards.
Kippax doubled their lead with almost the last kick of the game when they caught Ossett on the break with a ball over the top of the defence which their striker finished well under pressure from stand in centre back Ashley Grint. Full Time: - Kippax Athletic 2 v Ossett Town 0

OSSETT TOWN JUNIORS UNDER 12s GARFORTH LEAGUE
A fantastic all round team performance booked Ossett Town Under 12s a place in the County Cup Semi-finals, with a 2 – 0 win over Farsley Celtic Juniors.
After a couple of early scares Town established a firm grip on the game, and soon went a goal up through Harry Townend. Hard work throughout the team limited further threat from Farsley to breakaways, and midway through the second period a well struck free kick from Will Craik was turned into his own net by a Farsley defender.
Player of the match honours went to Tom Smith, for an intelligent performance up front, but the whole squad can be proud of this display, and look forward to a semi final at County H.Q. Fleet Lane.

Ossett town under 9s vs Rothwell Juniors
Ossett Town Terriers 1 Rothwell Juniors 3
Ossett worked hard against top of the league Rothwell. The first 15 minutes saw both teams cancel each other out, however Ossett seemed to be chasing shadows against a strong Rothwell team. Rothwell took the lead on 16 minutes with a tremendous looping shot from the half way line, giving keeper Matthew Depledge no chance.
Danny Bell and Edward Medley tried hard to keep Rothwell back but they extended their lead to 2-0 from a corner as Ossett were too slow to mark the Rothwell Players. Half Time 0-2. Ossett came out in the second half battling for every ball, Will Pollitt started to make some fine runs from midfield and Connor Rigg held the ball well up front. Ossett pulled a goal back on 30 minutes. A Good corner from Will Pollitt saw Connor Rigg loose his marker and hit a low shot into the corner. Ossett seemed to be still celebrating their goal before Rothwell regained their 2 goal cushion, Ossett allowed Rothwell to score their 3rd goal straight from the kick off. Luke Gothard came close for Ossett in the last minute with a header cleared of the line. Ossett are starting to work hard for the full 40 minutes and this is showing against strong teams. DJH Plant Man of the Match went to Danny Bell for a superb defensive performance.
Ossett Town Tigers 2 Rothwell Juniors 4
The Tigers were unlucky in this game. The first Rothwell goal came from a cross on the left turned in by Adam Wilson for an own goal on 10 minutes. Rothwell extended their lead with another own goal. A low cross from the left was met by Luke Herries who beat Goal Keeper Stuart Dyson with a sliced clearance. Danny Hayward had a couple of half chances, however his shots were straight at the Rothwell Keeper. Frazer Ellis, Josh Pamment and Jack Harrop kept working in midfield. Rothwell extended their lead to 3-0 before Danny Hayward spun on the penalty spot and scored a well deserved goal. Half Time 1-3. Like the Terriers game the Tigers failed to give in and Jack Harrop started to worry the Rothwell Defence with his pace. Stuart Dyson had a great game in goal, collecting most through balls. Rothwell added a forth goal before Jack Harrop pulled one back in the last few minutes. Full time 2-4. Burmatex Man of the Match went to Stuart Dyson for a good performance in goal.

Ossett Town U11’s – Garforth League Ossett Town 6(2) – Calverley United 2(1), 4th February 2007. KO 10.30. Ossett Scorers: Walsh(2), Spurr(2), Cundall, Taylor Ossett MoM: Walsh
Uphill Struggle and Downhill from There
Ossett made no mistake today in sealing a good win in an entertaining game. For the first time in a long time, the weather was almost sub-tropical and apart from the opposition, the only real challenge today was the steeply sloping pitch which wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Hovis TV advert - “he were a great baker our dad….”.
Town played uphill in the first half, and won a corner with their first attack of the game; which Turfrey promptly and spectacularly miss-hit and nearly took out the refreshment stand behind the home team’s goals. A sign of things to come? Not really.
Within in minutes of the tea ladies getting the all-clear and crawling out of cover, Walsh turned on the style and scored a cracking goal. Wright, once again a machine in defence and midfield all through the game, hit a long ball which Walsh effortlessly brought down, did a drag-back to wrong foot his markers and launched an unstoppable shot into the top corner. 1-0.
Despite the slope, Ossett kept up the attack and with Taylor getting another shot on goal before Walsh became creator for Town’s second. Campbell hit a goal kick to Sykes (playing left back for the injured Stead) who played it up field to the waiting Walsh. A brilliant diagonal through ball from Walsh fell into the path of Spurr as he sprinted in at the far post and he kept his concentration and nerve to bury the ball, as the tackles came in to greet him.
Calverley got one back within seconds though as Ossett were caught short and despite the shouts for offside. From that point Ossett seemed to lose their way a little as the home side started to take advantage of the slope, hemming Town into their own half. Just once more did Town come close to scoring as Daniel put Turfrey through and only an amazing acrobatic save from the Calverley keeper prevented another Ossett goal. For all their late endeavours Calverley failed to see any end result though, due mainly to some good Ossett defending from Ruane, Fox, Mountain and co., and the half finished 2-1 to Ossett.
The second half started with an early Cundall goal to take Ossett 3-1 ahead. This time it was Spurr the provider as he hit an opportunistic first time cross spinning through the area to Cundall on the far post and which he neatly put away. Turfrey again came close to scoring, turning and striking a shot against the crossbar from a tight angle before Taylor made it 4-1. Spurr hit a nice pass out to Walsh on the right who whipped in a testing cross. The Calverley keeper could only parry the ball to predatory feet of the waiting Taylor who calmly stuck it away.
Turfrey was unlucky not make it five for Ossett as he latched onto the end of another first time cross from Spurr; another brilliant flying save from the home keeper stopped Turfrey’s powerful goal-bound volley. And shortly afterwards Walsh showed vision and quick execution as he scuffed the top of the crossbar with a long range shot.
It was not long therefore before Ossett inevitably increased their lead further as Spurr hit a quite inspired swerving shot high over the keeper with the outside of his right boot. Such was the subtly and disguise employed by Spurr, he managed to make it look like a miss-hit cross. Amazing!
Walsh rounded Town’s scoring off with an unstoppable shot, despite appearing to be a good 3-4 yards offside. Turfrey was the provider, sending Walsh racing through one on one with keeper and defender on his shoulder. The outcome was never in question. 6-1 to Ossett. Calverley ended proceedings with a consolation goal which again had more than a hint of offside associated with it to make it 6-2. No matter though. Another good game and deserved win for Ossett.
