Ossett Town Juniors – Under 11’s – Huddersfield League
Silkstone 0 v 2 Ossett Town
Scorers: White and Carney
Player of the Match: Wakka Awad
“Silky Town Grab the Points”
On a bright sunny Sunday morning, which was in stark contrast to the previous week’s wet and windy affair, Town visited division three rivals Silkstone. The pitch was in superb condition and the prospect of some quality football was on the cards.
Both teams did not disappoint. With the silky skills of Town on show and the persistent doggedness of the Silkstone defence, this was a cracking game. Town had most of the play and despite being camped out in the opposition half for long periods of the game they found that they were frustrated by the able defence and goalkeeping of Silkstone which limited Town’s actual shots on target.
On the left of midfield, Horsfall and striker Hartshone were linking up well and causing all sorts of trouble and in a period of ten minutes won four corners due to their persistency and with good support from Potter and the tenacity of Lonsdale. Despite Potter knocking in some good corners, the Silkstone keeper was in outstanding form and calmly collected the ball at his near post on three occasions – if Silkstone were to be beaten at corners, Town needed a strategy to prevent the keeper getting to the ball first!
The back three of Sheen, Scott and Briggs were once again in commanding form and all three were instrumental in limiting Silkstone’s attacks to one or two solitary affairs. Briggs and right winger Ahmed were particularly effective on the right snuffing out every attempt by the Silkstone strikeforce to break through.
Whilst most of the play took play on the left, it was actually a rare foray on the right that led to the first goal. Town won a throw-in following good work from striker Rogers. Ahmed took the initiative throwing quickly to the feet of Rogers who then knocked a fine pass back into the path of captain marvel White who was just outside the 18-yard box. White calmly collected the ball, looked up and after composing himself pulled the trigger on that right foot of his to let leash with a shot of such power that the keeper watched helplessly has it sailed over his head. One nil.
Player of the match Awad entered the fray on twenty minutes and made his presence felt straight away and for the rest of the game he never stopped. One minute he would be running and skipping past the opposition players in gazelle type fashion and the next chasing back to help the defensive back line.
At half time a plan was hatched for beating the keeper at corners and within five minutes of the re-start the plan paid off. Winning a corner on the right, Horsfall was the key player standing in front of the keeper to prevent him getting to the ball first. It worked beautifully – in sailed the excellent corner, the keeper tried but could not get past Horsfall and was now stranded beyond his far post. As the ball fell to Carney he had a free net to aim at and despite the Silkstone defender getting a head to the ball he could do nothing other than help the ball over the line. Two nil.
Hobson was now on in a re-shaped defensive back line which continued to hold up well. Again, Silkstone’s attacks were limited to rare opportunities and on the one occasion when they did get the better of the Town’s defence, goalkeeper Dann was on hand to save the day.
Town continued to press for another goal and despite Scott coming close on at least two occasions, the Silkstone defence held firm and with excellent goalkeeping kept the score to a respectable two nil.
This was a good game of football on a large pitch and patience was the key word and it paid off with two good goals and another three points to keep Town challenging for a top place in the table.
