Force 4 for Springmill
The air was still everywhere in Ossett on beautiful spring day, but up at Springmill the customary stiff breeze was blowing - just for once it was from the east but still enough to make it a game of two halves.
This was a six pointer in the lower reaches of the WRWFL first division and Town came into it knowing they had never taken even a point from their Castleford rivals.
Rose kicked off into the wind and Town had the best of the possession, Gemma Howell hitting two sweet left foot strikes from the edge of the area just wide.
White Rose's big strikers kept Emily Stevenson and Emma Blenkinsop busy in the centre of defence but found no way through until they forced a corner after 19 minutes. A good cross found their centre forward on the penalty spot who made sure. White Rose leading one nil against the run of play.
Gemma continued to boss the midfield, had cheeky run into the 6 yard box beating six players on the way and finally got another left foot strike on target only to see the keeper tip it round.
With 5 to go of the half Gemma burst into the box onto a telling pass from Toni Lines on the left wing. The Rose defender could only bundle her over - penalty to Ossett but who would take it? Regular spot kick taker Kate Westmoreland is on holiday and it looked like no one could handle the pressure until...................... up stepped Vicky Saul who coolly slotted home to bring Town level.
Half time - Ossett Town 1 White Rose 1
Having turned round the second half was played more in Towns half and, with Gemma coming deeper to find the ball, Town relied on bursting out down the wings. Either side could have taken all the points, Becky Woods turned a stinging shot round the post to deny White Rose and Rose's keeper was put under pressure by long range efforts from Jody Wray and Vicky Saul.
The game , quite rightly, ended honours even and points shared, but that didn't stop Town players stomping off muttering under their breath about chances missed - target practice in training this week!
Final score - Ossett Town 1 White Rose 1
Player of the match was Gemma Howell who honestly looked in a different class in the first half. Keeley Dewhirst and Vicky Saul deserve mentions for a job well done but in fact the whole team raised their game for this match and played sensible but attractive football.
Team
Becky Woods, Amber Scarth, Emily Stevenson, Emma Blenkinsop, Keeley Dewhirst, Jody Wray, Gemma Howell, Sophie Morrison, Toni Lines (Sarah Law 60), Vicky Saul, Jamie Fitton (Angela Lines 45). Sub not used - Laura Patterson.
