The ladies visited Lepton Highlanders, currently top of the division, and for the first half kept the dream alive but succumbed to tiredness and injury in the second half.
An already thin on the ground Town squad kicked off with centre back Emma Blenkinsop carrying a thigh strain so she swapped with centre forward Jamie Fitton so Emma could run it off - but then after 20 minutes Jamie lands awkwardly from a tackle, damages her shoulder and is unable to continue- Emma back in defence and Angela Lines comes on. At half time Emma cannot continue so Laura Patterson comes on in goal and Becky Woods goes up front with Toni Lines moving to centre back. After 20 minutes of the second half Laura is rammed into the post by a forward but continues, with 10 to go Jody Wray twists an ankle and moves from the wing to centre forward to hop and with 5 minutes left Lauras injury becomes too much and she comes off with Becky returning to the nets. Oh what tale of woe!
The final score was 6-0 to Lepton but let's look at the good things:
1, For the first 40 minutes the game was even with Ossett perhaps having the edge.
2. Half time of 1-0 to Lepton was travesty.
3. All the players can be proud of the constant effort that they showed.
Player of the match Keeley Dewhirst shone in midfield, Jody Wray tormented the Lepton defence until twisting her ankle and Emily Stevenson showed strength of character to try and keep things together in defence. Vicky Saul continues to excite with quick intelligent football, Sarah Law improves every week and has a long throw that would be the envy of some men and Amber Scarth deputised well at left back with her usual cool head.
Town have still to play Lepton at home and should be looking for at least a point if not three if they can field a full squad.
Team
Becky Woods, Sarah Law, Emma Blenkinsop (Laura Patterson 45), Emily Stevenson, Amber Scarth, Jody Wray, Keeley Dewhirst, Sophie Morrison, Toni Lines, Vicky Saul, Jamie Fitton (Angela Lines 20)
